Do Not Duplicate Key

Key copying has become a very common practice, but though it has made things more convenient for us – since we generally tend to lose our keys – it also raises some serious security concerns.

For example, what if someone somehow manages to “borrow” your house key, have it copied, and return it to you without rousing suspicion? If a stranger pulls that off, he would have access to everything inside your house, and the freedom to take anything he wants without your knowledge. This is a scenario that's far worse than simply losing your house key, since you won't feel the need to replace your lock, giving whoever has the duplicate key the means to get in anytime he wants.

This dilemma has not been missed by locksmiths and key manufacturers. And the awareness of this problem has led to a solution known as Do Not Duplicate keys. Though these keys may not always come in unique shapes (that depends on the company that made them), they are given “Do Not Duplicate” labels so that other locksmiths will know full well that they are not meant to be copied without proper authorization.

Granted, it's a solution that has yet to be perfected (after all, there may still be locksmiths who consent to key duplication despite the label), but it's one that can, at the very least, cut the chances of your key being copied without your knowledge or approval.

If you're planning to have Do Not Duplicate keys made, you should find a quality and trustworthy locksmith near your location. Don't worry if a name or place doesn't immediately come to mind. You can easily find the best within your immediate area by conducting an online search. Your search will be over before you know it, and all that will be left for you to do is ask your local locksmith of choice to make your keys for you.
